Vendee Globe 2012-2013 virtual race

Across the Equator

SeriousWealth has just crossed the equator and is entering the doldrums, the fleet is compressing and I have gained the lead in the group by heading up the Coast of South America

I am also pleased to say that Compared with the real race I have stayed ahead of both Jean Le Cam and Mike Golding who are still to my East and slightly behind, but in better winds.

I am gaining ground on the group ahead and expect to have a faster path through the doldrums, but am fighting hard to stay ahead of my nearest rival SC Pampero who is sailing faster on a more NE course.

I expect to clear the Doldrums in 24 hours and pick up the Trade Winds, Heading for the Azores. The major obstacle being the Azores high which could change everything if I get stuck in its light winds. I just hope i do not lose control of SeriousWealth at a critical time due to Internet outages.

In the real race there is a strong change that Brit Alex Thomson will take over 3rd place as the boat ahead of him has lost it keel, which makes it difficult to sail as the only way to keep it upright is to fill it with water ballast, otherwise it will capsize and there are stronger winds ahead which increase the risk.
